About unschooling

  • Very young children learn to walk and talk, count and identify symbols, differentiate between light, dark, and various colors, observe the natural world and social relationships, and feel the effects of motion, gravity, etc., with little or no explicit instruction. Young children learn a multitude of concepts in a natural, informal, and enjoyable way.
  • We all know what schooling is. We know what it looks like regardless of whether it is done at school or at home. The children involved hunch over a worksheet, furrowing their brows as they work at problems. The worksheets are assigned and the children have to complete them on schedule.
  • We unschooling parents love John Holt. He coined the term "unschooling." You will find his quotes all over our websites.
  • Unschooling is a bit of a misnomer inasmuch as people equate learning with schooling or education. However, it is one of the most common terms used for learning through life's experiences. The unschooling approach to learning typically lacks a predetermined plan. That is one aspect of the lifestyle that appeals to many an adventurous nature.

This help comes first in the forms of willingness and availability, and thereafter in the multitude of ways and things a parent can provide in support of the child's pursuit of knowledge and experience.
